Wild Stuffed Wings
Why wild stuffed sings? Because it is barbecue and grilling season, because I wanted to try something new, and because a friend was coming over to dinner. I do not normally try experiments on guests, but you really can’t go wrong with wings, especially stuffed grilled chicken wings. When I told my friend what we were having that night, she was totally game to try it, and said the same thing, you cannot go wrong with wings.
Crazy Recipe Ideas
The idea for this recipe started when one of my co-workers on my day job blurted out this idea for pizza flavored chicken wings. He was surfing the web when saw the article and had a tone of disgust when he said it. After some thought, however, several others in the lab thought is sounded good. Then we began discussing how we would cook them. There was some discussion about stuffing the wings with small chunks of mozzarella or pepperoni, and we all agreed that the wings should have a coating of Parmesan cheese and/or a good pizza sauce.
So what started as pizza flavored chicken wings has evolved into this recipe for stuffed wings. Wild stuffed wings are lightly stuffed with a little bit of pepperoni, or prosciutto, and cheese, so they definitely have a bit of that pizza flavoring. And when you serve these, you can either coat the wings in a good pizza sauce or use the sauce for dipping. I made these with pesto sauce and coated each one by placing them in a bowl, pouring sauce in and mixing up the wings. They were delicious!
Grilled Stuffed Wings
When I cooked these on the grill, I decided to start them in a pan so that they could bake for a little while. This was to make sure that they did not burn and lose all the stuffing. When I felt they were about done, after about 20 or 30 minutes, I transferred them to the grill to brown.
Once they were done I doused them in pesto sauce and they were ready to eat. The end result was a very good recipe. This is a labor intensive recipe so be prepared for a little work. It takes time to cut the slits into each wing and stuff them. It was definitely worth the effort though when my guest raved about how good they were.
Wild Stuffed Wings
Stuffed chicken wings are great for your next tailgating party or anytime you need a delicious fun appetizer.
- 12 large chicken wings (wings only, no drumettes)
- 22 pieces pieces of pepperoni or Prosciutto, cut small for stuffing
- 3 - 5 pieces pieces of mozzarella sandwich cheese, cut up small for stuffing
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 - 2 c pizza sauce
Heat grill to 425 degrees or medium high heat.
Cut a small slit in the meat. Stuff each wing with a small piece of Prosciutto and a small amount of mozzarella cheese.
Using a wooden toothpick connect the slit of each wing so that the filling does not come out. Coat the wings in olive oil.
Place the wings in a foil lined pan and place on the grill. Close the cover and cook for 20 to 30 minutes, or until almost done.
Move the wings to the direct heat on the grill and cook another 10 to 15 minutes, or until browned and the wings are fully cooked. Turn as needed for browning.
Place chicken wings in a bowl, and coat with pizza sauce by gently stirring. Alternatively, you can use the sauce for dipping. If desired sprinkle with some fresh Parmesan cheese.
